Inclusion Engineering in Steel Mills and Steel Foundries

Nonmetallic inclusions have significant effects on properties of steel foundry castings, and steel mill products. The current study, reported is a study of the evolution and elimination of non-metallic inclusions in the liquid metal before solidification. The method used incorporates industrial heat experiments including sampling during plant visits and analysis using an SEM system with Automated Feature Analysis. Since the SEM with AFA produces a large data set in spreadsheet format, post processing analysis programs have been developed to help understand the life cycle of the inclusions and their influence on properties. Also the thermochemistry of the inclusion formation and modification sequence is being studied thermodynamically using FACTSAGE software.
