Title: A Voyage of Discovery: Career Considerations for Emerging Materials Professionals

Sunniva R. Collins, Ph. D., FASM (President, ASM International 2014-2015)
Associate Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH
Engineering in the 21st century is much different than even twenty years ago. The materials science and engineering field continues to evolve, and for the emerging professional there can be great uncertainty as well as great opportunity. As Marshall Goldsmith so aptly noted, “what got you here won’t get you there.” In addition to technical acumen, remaining engaged and active in your profession requires a different set of skills to succeed in the new global landscape, where megaprojects and multicultural work teams are fast becoming the norm. Using examples from her career in manufacturing research and development, Dr. Collins will highlight nontechnical areas where materials professionals should develop proficiency: communication, ethics and professionalism, diversity, work/life balance and lifelong learning.
