Abstract:

Today’s carbon and low alloy cast steels rely on heat treatments to develop specified properties. However, a new class of low cost cast steels with acceptable properties in the as-cast condition has been developed. The role of alloying elements and casting cooling rates on the development of as-cast microstructure and properties will be discussed as well as the performance of as-cast steels compared to heat treated steels and ductile irons.

Speaker:

Dr. Robert Voigt is Professor of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State University. He received his PhD. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1981. Bob currently directs metalcasting consortia research programs with the participation of over 30 metalcasting companies. He has published over 200 papers on various aspects of foundry technology ranging from machinability to alloy development to casting process control to green sand emission reduction. He is a member of four AFS technical committees and is a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
