Abstract: Discussions of progress in SCR and IGBT device technology with greater current carrying capabilities that leads to fewer devices, wider tuning windows and varying frequencies ranges used in solid-state power supplies. At the same time these more powerfully devices make power supplies smaller footprints & simpler to set up and operate. Wider tuning windows make it easier to load match with fewer manual adjustments to the capacitors and the output transformer even when changing work piece size or coil changes. Many design improvements lead to less capital cost and better electrical efficiencies that reduce the operating costs of induction systems all will be reviewed in this presentation. Computer controls, model simulations, coil construction, quench and water-cooling innovations all will be discussed. Bring your most difficult induction application or problem to discuss.

Speaker: Fred has 35 years of experience in all aspects of induction heating & melting. He graduated from Holy Name Cathedral High School, Chicago, Il in 1972 and started his career right out in commercial induction heat treat working 13 years building coils, fixtures and solid-state induction power supplies. Fred worked at various heat treaters until leaving as plant manager of Chicago Induction Metal Treating and became District Sales Manager, Ajax TOCCO Magnethermic in 1986. Fred has been an active ASM member since 1985, AFS member since 1989, and SME member  since 1998. He became an ASM HTS Board member in 2008 and is currently serving a second term. Fred was the Chairman of the ASM Events Committee 2008 to 2010, and the ASM HTS Conference & Expo Co-Chair for the 2001 & 2009 Heat Treat Events.
