Continuous casting process for gray and ductile iron bar, and ductile iron as a steel alternative

Bob O'Rourke

Product Engineering Manager

Abstract: Invented over a half century ago, ductile iron castings are proven to be an excellent alternative to steel castings, weldments and forgings. Continuous cast ductile iron barstock was introduced into the United States in the 1960's and is an excellent choice for highly machined parts made from carbon steel bar. Ductile iron can be machined at speeds that are 2 - 3 times faster than steel resulting in significant cost savings. This presentation will show the process of continuous casting, the cost savings expectations from improved machinability and the carbon steel grades that can be successfully replaced with ductile iron barstock.

Speaker: Bob O'Rourke graduated from the University of Missouri - Rolla (now Missouri S&T) with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering in 1983 and went to work for Castwell Products Division of Wells Manufacturing Company as melt foreman. Later transferred to the Dura-Bar Divison working as lab supervisor, continuous casting supervisor, quality assurance manager and currently as Product Engineering Manager. Earned an MBA from Keller Graduate School in 1993. I am a member of AFS, ASM and the ASTM A-04 committee. Also a member of the Ductile Iron Society and served a 2 year term on the board of directors.
