"Corrosion Phenomena and Methods of Prevention" Educational Seminar Series Sponsored by the Peoria Chapter of ASM When: March 3rd 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (registration starts at 7:15 am) Caterpillar Inc. Technical Center – Bldg A Auditorium Mossville, IL What: Learn about corrosion fundamentals, testing and prevention methods from a leading industry expert. Special topics will cover combined chemical/mechanical effects including corrosion-wear synergy, corrosion-assisted fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement and stress-corrosion cracking. This educational opportunity is being made available to all who are interested at the ASM subsidized price of only $10. Who should attend: Anyone interested in learning more about corrosion phenomena, testing and methods of prevention. Because corrosion is such a universal issue, a wide variety of scientists and engineers would benefit from this course including materials scientists, mechanical and metallurgical engineers, design and research engineers, as well as plant, maintenance or operating engineers. Registration: Please RSVP to Bob Bierman by March 1, 2010 Email: Bierman_Bob@cat.com Tel: 309-494-2588 Please direct all questions to Olga Rowan Email: Rowan_Olga@cat.com Tel: 309-675-7970 Seminar Agenda: 7:15 – 8:00 am Registration 8:00 -- 8:15 am Introduction 8:15 – 10:00 am Fundamentals of Corrosion Theory Electrochemistry of Corrosion Forms of Corrosion Break 10:15 – 11:00 am Corrosion Testing Methods Lunch break 12:00 – 1:00 pm Corrosion prevention Methods Special Topics: Combined Chemical/Mechanical Effects 1:00 – 2:00 pm Corrosion/Wear Synergy 2:00 – 2:30 pm Corrosion-Assisted Fatigue Break 2:45 – 3:30 pm Hydrogen Embrittlement, Stress Corrosion Cracking 3:30 – 4:00 pm Rust 4:00 – 4:30 pm Open questions Abstract: A one day overview of corrosion and corrosion prevention will be given. The electrochemical theory of corrosion will be covered to serve both as a basis to describe various types of corrosion behavior as well as corrosion test methods. Particular attention will be given to complex environments where materials can experience both chemical and mechanical effects such as hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking and corrosive wear. Corrosion prevention strategies such as materials selection and surface processing will be discussed. The audience can also bring up specific corrosion related problems for general discussion. Speaker: John Truhan received a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University (1977) and is currently an Engineering Specialist in the Engine Materials Technology group at Caterpillar, responsible for corrosion and tribilogical issues for engines and equipment including filtration, lubricants and coolants. Prior to joining Caterpillar in 2006, he had served as a Research Professor at the University of Tennessee working in affiliation with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (2002-2006), Senior Staff Research Scientist at Fleetguard and Cummins Inc (1985-2001), and Deputy Section Leader at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1977-1985). John is a leading expert in the areas of corrosion, filtration, engine tribology and wear. His numerous awards include R&D 100 Award (2006), Cummins Best Practice Presentation (1996), SAE Excellence Award (1995). He has over 60 publications and major presentations at international conferences.
